Who It’s For

Most linear gas fireplaces announce themselves: a ribbon of flame over glass or stone, handsome but unmistakably gas. You want the presence of a real wood fire at a scale wood can’t easily give you. What Makes It Special

The Wilderness burner runs the fire up through full-length ceramic driftwood logs instead of along a strip in front of them, so it moves the way a wood fire moves—flames rising among the logs, not behind glass pebbles. At five feet wide, it’s the fire people cross the room to look at.

The glass is frameless, and because this is a high-glass model, interior lighting is included—the driftwood sits lit like a scene even when the flame is off, and you can dim it from the remote.

You also choose your front: Ortal’s nearly invisible mesh screen, or the double-glass version, where near-silent fans move air between two panes so the outer glass stays far cooler than a single pane would.
