You need a fireplace that arrives finished. If you want a real gas fire in a room with no fireplace, and no appetite for a remodel, the Ortal Stand Alone 75 hangs on the wall or stands on its base and is done. Choose a built-in instead and the finish work comes with it.

What makes it special
The Stand Alone 75 is a finished piece, not a construction project. Because the whole unit stands in the room—wall-mounted or on its optional decorative base—there’s no framing and no tile, and it goes in with minimal construction disruption. Ortal’s passive cool wall design means the wall above stays cool enough for a TV or artwork to hang right over the fire.
The remote does the tending. Set a temperature and the fire holds the room there, adjusting the flame on its own; program it to come on before you’re up, or run eco mode and let the flame rise and fall with the room.
Possible downsides
- Front-facing glass only—the fire shows from one side of the unit.
- The decorative base and black reflective panel are options, not included.
- Ships set up for natural gas; running propane requires a conversion kit.
