Who It’s For

In a traditional room, the fireplace wall has three jobs: hold the fire, the mantel, and the TV—and still look like it belongs. Most gas fireplaces manage one or two. You need a fire that looks like a wood-burning hearth and leaves the wall above it usable. If you’re building or remodeling a living room, great room, or den where the hearth anchors the wall, the Ortal Traditional TR 110 is built to look like it came with the house. Pick a standard builder unit instead and you keep the fire but give up the brick hearth—and often the wall above it.

What Makes It Special

Start with the wall. Ortal’s passive cool wall design keeps the surface above the fire cool enough that you can hang a TV or artwork directly above the fireplace—no oversized mantel, no awkward clearances.

Then the fire itself. The firebox is lined in a full brick interior—herringbone or horizontal pattern in red, tan, or black—behind a bed of logs, so what you see is brick and fire, not an appliance. The design is frameless, so your tile, stone, or mantel runs right to the edge of the glass. It builds into a framed wall, which means tile or stone finish work is part of the job—plan for it from the start.

Living with it is push-button. The remote holds the room at the temperature you set, cycling the flame up and down on its own, and it runs daily schedules and an eco mode that eases the fire between high and low. Run it from the wall switch or your phone if you’d rather.

Possible Downsides

• Ships set up for natural gas; propane requires the conversion kit.
• Double-glass and lighting configurations need household power and won’t run during an outage.
• Installation and annual service must come from an authorized Ortal dealer—otherwise the warranty is void.

If you want a fire that reads as a masonry hearth without giving up the wall above it, the Traditional TR 110 is the right decision. The room with the big brick fire becomes the room everyone ends up in.

Interiors run from red, tan, or black brick in herringbone or horizontal patterns to flat black, reflective black, and Blackridge, and log sets range from the standard five-log set to weathered driftwood, refractory clay, English logs, HD concrete, white birch, bonfire, campfire, and aspen styles, with single branches in black, grey, or white to fill out the fire.
