A wood-burning hearth is a second job: hauling, stacking, tending, sweeping. Most gas fireplaces solve that and give up the look, so the fire reads as an appliance instead of a hearth. You need a fire that looks like a masonry fireplace and runs like a gas one. If you want herringbone brick and a stack of logs behind glass you control from the couch, the Ortal Traditional TR 90 is that fireplace. A standard gas unit heats the room just fine, but you can tell it’s a gas unit.

What makes it special

The fire view is nearly three feet wide and over two and a half feet tall, set against real brick panels in herringbone or horizontal patterns with a full log set on the floor of the firebox. It looks like a fireplace a mason built, not a unit a truck delivered—the focal point of the room, not a window into one.

Ortal’s cool wall technology keeps the wall above the fire cool enough to hang a TV or artwork directly over it, and the frameless European design lets your tile or stone run right to the edge of the glass. No metal louvers, no border announcing where the fireplace ends and your wall begins.

Living with it is push-button simple. Set the remote to 70 and the fireplace holds the room there on its own, cycling the flame as needed—or run it on a timer or program so it’s burning when you walk in. The TR 90 is a zero-clearance fireplace: it builds into a framed wall during construction or a remodel, and every installation ends with finish work right to the glass.

Possible downsides

• Ships set up for natural gas; running it on propane requires a conversion kit installed by a qualified technician.
• Brick-and-log interiors are the only style—there is no glass-media or contemporary linear option for this model.
• The double-glass heat barrier option requires household power, so configured that way the fireplace won’t run during an outage.
