Who it’s for

A fireplace usually belongs to one room, and the space on the other side of the wall gets nothing. So half the house lives with the fire and half lives without it. You need a fire both rooms can see. If you’re building or remodeling and want the wall between two living spaces to hold the fire instead of hiding it, the Ortal Tunnel 44 is the one. Choose a single-sided unit instead and one room gets the flame while the other gets the back of a wall.

What makes it special

The Tunnel 44 is built into the wall itself, so the same fire shows through to both sides—one fire, visible from two rooms. Dinner on one side, the couch on the other, and everyone is looking at the same flame. It turns the wall that divides the space into the thing that connects it.

Because the design keeps the surface above the unit cool, you can hang a TV or artwork right above the fireplace. And the frameless European construction lets your tile or stone run right to the edge of the glass, so the fire reads as part of the wall, not an appliance set into it.

Possible downsides

• The Double Glass version requires household power and won’t operate during an outage; the protective screen version can run on batteries.
• It builds into a framed wall—a new-construction or remodel unit, not a slide-in for an existing fireplace, and both sides get finish work.
• It ships set up for natural gas; running it on propane means adding a conversion kit.
